She’s Got the Beats

Karen Timmons is named managing editor of Scripps Howard News Service in Washington.

By Kathryn S. Wenner
Kathryn S. Wenner, a former AJR associate editor, is a copy editor at the Washington Post.

Scripps Howard News Service in Washington promotes Karen Timmons from assistant managing editor to managing editor. She'll focus on "trying to hone what we call our franchise beats--education, health and what we call sprawl/environment." Timmons learned the ways of capital reporting while covering federal agencies and Congress for UPI, where she also worked as worldwide editor for lifestyle and entertainment. She went to the Washington Times as feature editor in 1992, and three years later Scripps Howard hired her as an editor. Timmons, 52, says her new job will involve promoting better writing and better reporting. In addition to bringing in a writing coach, she says she will "just allow the reporters to become excellent. Give people room to grow."
