Larry Kane, a Philadelphia TV news fixture for more than three decades, gets an unpleasant surprise when word leaks that the 11 p.m. slot he's held at CBS-owned KYW since 1994 will go to Marc Howard, a 25-year veteran of competitor WPVI. Kane and his 6 and 11 p.m. coanchor, Denise Saunders, will continue their duties on Channel 3's earlier newscast. "I'm still pretty startled by it all," says Kane, who turns 60 this month and is writing a book about his experiences as a reporter on the road with the Beatles. Howard, 65, who has coanchored the 5 p.m. news at ABC-owned Channel 6 since 1983, will be the solo anchor on KYW's third-place late newscast starting in January, going up against his former colleague Jim Gardner, a solo anchor and a ratings winner who has held the 11 o'clock spot at WPVI for 25 years. Having a single anchor speeds the pace of the show, Howard says, and if KYW wants to catch up, it makes sense to follow Channel 6's lead.
