CBS News lays off about 120 of its 1,600-person staff in an effort to cut costs. The move affects about 7 percent of the staff, most of whom held administrative positions, and does not involve bureau closings or dismissals of correspondents. The bureaus will, however, face some reorganization. CBS News President Andrew Heyward wrote in an October 8 memo, "We are consolidating management functions in our hubs in New York, Washington, Los Angeles, London and Tokyo." On other consolidation fronts, CBS and CNN have been involved in preliminary talks about merging news operations. CBS spokeswoman Sandy Genelius says, "There have been conversations over the last year and a half," but she maintains there's nothing "imminent."
