A Job Well Done

I just read your masterful treatment of the McClatchy saga and wish to congratulate you on sifting through so much detail in presenting a coherent, readable feature ("Is McClatchy Different?" August/September).

I spent 30 years at the Sacramento Bee, largely as garden writer, editor and photographer, and still remember the day Frank McCulloch entered the newsroom and energized the place. He went to a Sacramento Press Club meeting as featured speaker shortly after arriving and told the crowd: "Frank McPeak, our director of public relations, has told me we DON'T appear before the press to answer questions. What's your first question?"

Good work.
