The Quote Approval Dilemma

I enjoyed Jodi Enda's piece on the quote approval conundrum in AJR's Winter issue. I came up in old-school journalism (University of Minnesota, 1961) and can appreciate the dilemma facing today's journalists. Your interviews yielded some fascinating insights. Thank you!

The Post's Sarah Palin Gaffe

I won't argue the importance or lack thereof, of President Barack Obama's skeet shooting and whether it was worthy of the attention it received in the Washington Post and elsewhere.
[See AJR Editor and Senior Vice President Rem Rieder's column, "Too Zany for The Onion"] I will argue that the Post's story that Sarah Palin was joining Al Jazeera is demonstrative of a mind-set of many journalists toward the former governor. [The Post based its story on an item on the satirical Web site The Daily Currant.] The story has since been corrected, but the fact that The Daily Currant was used by a writer on the Post as a news source goes beyond the pale. Really – this got by at least one editor.
