Time's Policy

By James R. Gaines
Time's Managing Editor James R. Gaines

Managing Editor James R. Gaines issued this policy in April:

To be sure that everyone knows our policy on accepting fees and/or expenses for outside speaking engagements or other kinds of sponsored appearances, I want to make it perfectly clear: The policy is that you may not do it. If an appearance is in the magazine's interest we will pay for it, either from the editorial or publishing budget. If there is some special occasion in which there is absolutely no possible conflict (and I'm trying hard to think of one but can't), an appeal may be made..., but without specific authorization taking fees and/or expenses is out. Failure to conform to this policy will be regarded as a very serious offense.
