Pecker's Empire

WHEN DAVID PECKER'S American Media Inc. bought its chief competitor last November, seven supermarket tabs became part of the same company. Here's how Pecker is positioning them to try to boost advertising, circulation and credibility:
Country Weekly--first stop for news and history of country music and its artists Globe--unloads all the dirt that's fit to print on celebrities and news. Says Editor in Chief Tony Frost: "Controversy is our middle name." National Examiner--a teller of bizarre human-interest stories National Enquirer--a newsy publication Star--a celebrity watcher Sun--focusing on a more mature audience, 55 and up, with health-oriented and religious tales Weekly World News--the most outrageous tabloid of the bunch, and proud of it--with tales of supernatural occurrences, children lifting 2-ton weights and the wedding of the "world's fattest man."
