1869 > The Indianapolis News is founded by former Indianapolis Sentinel reporter John Holliday.

1903 > The Indianapolis Star is founded by George McCulloch, a Muncie, Indiana, industrialist.

1934 > Eugene C. Pulliam founds Central Newspapers.

1944 > Central Newspapers buys the Star.

1948 > Central Newspapers buys the News.

1995 > The staffs of the papers merge. The combined staff continues to publish both the morning Star and afternoon News. Frank Caperton becomes executive editor of both papers.

1999 > Publisher Eugene S. Pulliam dies. Dale Duncan succeeds him. The News ceases publication. Caperton retires.

2000 > Tim Franklin becomes editor of the Star. Gannett acquires Central Newspapers, owner of the Arizona Republic as well as the Star. Barbara Henry is named president and publisher of the Star. Franklin leaves to become editor of the Orlando Sentinel. Calvin Stovall becomes managing editor.

2001 > Terry Eberle succeeds Franklin as editor. Stovall leaves.

2002 > Richard Luna succeeds Stovall as managing editor.

2003 > Eberle steps down as editor and is succeeded by Dennis Ryerson. Luna leaves and is succeeded by Pam Fine as managing editor.
