Onetime AJR cover girl moves across the Potomac.

Lori Robertson (robertson.lori@gmail.com), a former AJR managing editor, is a senior contributing writer for the magazine.

Onetime AJR cover girl Kathy Kiely moves across the Potomac, from the Washington bureau of the New York Daily News to USA Today. Her 14 months on the News' White House beat have been "interesting, to say the least," but her new job, which began in mid-September, affords her "the opportunity to do more varied kinds of reporting and writing at a paper that's doing some interesting things," she says. Kiely, 42, calls her position on USA Today's Washington staff a general assignment beat for the nation's capital. She made AJR's cover in June 1994 for a story on new Washington bureau chiefs when she headed the late Houston Post's D.C. bureau. Kiely is one of many Daily News staffers to lately abandon their posts, among them Metro reporter Kevin Flynn, who switched over to the New York Times, and sports columnist Ian O'Connor, who left for Gannett Suburban Newspapers.
