WDIV veteran leaves local news.

By Lori Robertson
Lori Robertson (robertson.lori@gmail.com), a former AJR managing editor, is a senior contributing writer for the magazine.

Mike Wendland, a 19-year veteran investigative reporter with WDIV in Detroit, calls his local TV career quits. Formerly a Detroit News reporter, Wendland, 52, says he "was having a good time" at WDIV but opted out of his contract two years early in September to find something new. Broadcast news is "changing in ways I'm not real comfortable with," he says, citing as examples local news' reliance on consultants and the "cannibalistic" reporting of other outlets' news. Wendland is exploring his options. Already he'll be producing a weekly radio show called "PC Talk" plus a weekly TV news report on computers and the Internet to be distributed to all NBC affiliates on the NBC News Channel.
