Jonathan Landman, editor of the New York Times' Week in Review, steps up as Metro editor.

After two years as the New York Times' Metro Editor, Joyce Purnick goes back to writing the paper's "Metro Matters" column. Jonathan Landman , editor of the paper's Week in Review section and a Times staffer of 12 years, steps up as her successor. "It's fabulous, thrilling, scary," Landman says of the new job. Why scary? "It's a big, complicated, messy city," he explains, "not to mention three states."... Matthew Cooper completes "the hat trick," as he calls it, by taking the deputy Washington bureau chief job with Time magazine. The 36-year-old Cooper has worked for all three newsmagazines, coming to Time from Newsweek and previously spending some years at U.S. News & World Report . "Well, I joke sometimes with friends that Der Spiegel is next," he says.... Susan Goldberg leaves her deputy managing editor post at USA Today to become managing editor of the San Jose Mercury News .... The fortnightly Salt Lake Observer , launched in June 1998 as a punchy, upscale alternative on the city's media scene, calls it quits.
