The Daily Oklahoman , a subject of harsh journalism critiques of late, brings in a new executive editor. Stan Tiner , editor of Alabama's Mobile Register for the past seven years, replaces Managing Editor Ed Kelley , who requested a return to the Oklahoma City paper's Washington bureau. Tiner, 56, likes the fact the Daily Oklahoman is a statewide paper with about twice the circulation--at 222,876--of the Register. "I had never edited a paper that had that kind of statewide ability perhaps to kind of do good for the whole state," he says. Editor of Louisiana's Shreveport Journal for 13 years before his Register days, Tiner is a lifelong newspaper man: He was a first-grade correspondent for Louisiana's Cotton Valley Wildcat . As for articles in AJR and Columbia Journalism Review depicting his new paper as an underachiever, Tiner says, "I would say wherever you go that most papers can improve and be better.... There's a real air of excitement here in talking with the folks."
