Beaupre Bows Out   

Cincinnati Enquirer editor takes a job at Gannett headquarters.

Four months after the Cincinnati Enquirer retracted its critical series on Chiquita Brands International (see ``Bitter Fruit," September), Editor and Vice President Lawrence K. Beaupre leaves the paper for a job at parent Gannett's headquarters. Beaupre, 54, the Enquirer's leader since December 1992, joins the news staff of Gannett's Newspaper Division in Arlington, Virginia. His general news executive position, which has been open for a year, involves working with the company's papers on various projects, such as new sections, redesigns and training, according to Mimi Feller , senior vice president of public affairs and government relations at Gannett. Beaupre, who says he's ``been exploring this for some time," is looking forward to ``a real change of pace" after working as an editor for almost 20 years. Feller says Gannett had been searching for a senior executive to work with its larger papers and that Senior Vice President of News Philip R. Currie ``decided that Beaupre would be good in the role." Currie and Beaupre were reporters together in Rochester, New York, 30 years ago. Beaupre says the Chiquita debacle, which cost the Enquirer more than $10 million in a settlement, didn't ``exactly" play a role in his decision to leave, ``but this has been a tough year." He says he's glad to put that event behind him. ``It's a loss," President and Publisher Harry Whipple says of Beaupre's departure. ``He's an excellent editor." Managing Editor Rosemary Goudreau will serve as senior news executive until a new editor is named.
