Magalomania : Washington Post "Personalities" columnist Chuck Conconi leaves the paper after 13 years to become an editor at D.C.'s city magazine, the Washingtonian , where he'll write a monthly column and contribute profiles. Bambi Nicklen also joins the magazine as design director. She had been at Whittle Communications. At the same time, the 167,000-circulation monthly dismisses three staffers, including Associate Editor Mitchell Gerber , because of – what else? – poor ad sales...A Time Warner spokesman vehemently denies a Newsweek report that Corporate Editor Gilbert Rogin was dropped from Sports Illustrated because of a dispute over the photos being used with a story on the British Open. According to Newsweek, Rogin wanted to use more shots by photographer and friend Jacqueline Duvoisin but other editors disagreed. When contacted by WJR , Rogin insisted "nothing in that story is true." His name never left the SI masthead... Henry M. Gilman leaves The Boston Globe , where he was a business reporter, to join Newsweek as a senior editor

..New Audubon Editor Michael Robbins replaces the editors of predecessor Les Line 's "uncooperative" staff with new hires. Line, who was fired earlier this year after 25 years as editor, claims he had resisted "subtle pressure to make the magazine more politically correct." Robbins, meanwhile, hires Features Editor Bruce Stutz , formerly at Natural History , and Senior Editors Linda Perney and Roger Cohn . Perney comes from Travel Holiday , where she was executive editor; Cohn was a writer for The Philadelphia Inquirer . "Les didn't answer to anyone," Robbins says. "He had organized the place in a way that was inefficient and unworkable." (Line disagrees.) The only members of Line's staff who remain are two photo editors... Philadelphia names Editor Eliot Kaplan , who leaves his M.E. position at Gentleman's Quarterly . Kaplan replaces Ron Javers , who left after a dispute with publisher David Lipson Jr. over the magazine's annual "Best of Philly" story... GQ promotes Martin Beiser from executive editor to fill Kaplan's spot... Lee Eisenberg returns from London, where he moved 14 months ago to found the British Esquire , to develop new international titles for parent Hearst Corporation... WJR names Elliott Negin , former editor of Public Citizen and NuclearTimes , as managing editor...Longtime Vogue Fashion Editor Polly Allen Mellen jumps to Condé Nast's Allure . She replaces Freddie Leiba , who becomes a consultant.

Broadcast News : Jim Snyder , vice president of Post-Newsweek broadcast stations, retires after 40 years in the industry. He's been in charge of news for stations in Detroit, Miami, Hartford and Jacksonville since 1969... Jane Wallace , former principal of "The Jane Wallace Show" on cable's Lifetime network, hosts a new hour-long weekday talk show for Philadelphia's KYW...In D.C., "The Maury Povich Show" makes its debut on WRC... Patricia McMillen , who has been with "Donahue" since the show began in Dayton, Ohio, in 1967, becomes executive producer of the new "Pozner & Donahue" news program. The weekly syndicated show debuts on New York's WWOR with hosts Phil Donahue and Vladimir Pozner ... Leslie Devlin becomes co-anchor of "World Business" and anchor of "Business Briefs" on NBC's cable network, CNBC. She comes from Financial News Network, which was taken over by CNBC earlier this year...Reporter Mike Lewis joins Detroit's WDIV...KTLA in Los Angeles names the staff for its new morning news broadcast, including former Evening Assistant Director Lenn Goodside as director, Jose Colomer from FNN and Gail Nesbit from the Orange County News Channel as associate directors, and reporters Eric Spillman from KLAS in Las Vegas and Michele Ruiz from Whittle Communications... Burton Jablin , former executive producer at Chicago's WBBM, moves to L.A.'s KTTV as assistant news director... Hot Off The Wire : Reuters America names reporter Judith Crosson as correspondent in its new Denver bureau. She specializes in environmental issues. The mile-high bureau is the third that the wire service has opened this year in the U.S., bringing its total to 19 stateside and 117 worldwide...The Associated Press names Nicolas Tatro as deputy foreign editor in New York and Neil MacFarquhar as correspondent in the new Kuwait City bureau; Washington Foreign Editor Alexander Higgins moves to Switzerland to take over as chief of the Geneva bureau. Higgins replaces Hanns Neuerbourg , who retires after 43 years with the service...The Newhouse News Service in Washington hires Mary Kane , formerly of the Pittsburgh Press , to cover social issues; Joan Connell , former reporter of the San Jose Mercury News , to cover religion; Beth Frerking , former Washington bureau chief for the Denver Post , to cover family and education issues; and Joe Hallinan , former reporter for the Indianapolis Star , to cover regulatory agencies.

In Memoriam : Vaughn Shoemaker , 89, the cartoonist who created the beleaguered taxpayer John Q. Public and won two Pulitzer Prizes, died of cancer. His famous character first appeared in the Chicago Daily News , where Shoemaker began his career in 1922. In 1949 he moved to the New York Herald Tribune . A devout Christian, he once said that he began each drawing "on my knees with a prayer"... William P. Steven , 82, former executive editor of the Minneapolis Star and the Minneapolis Tribune , died of heart failure. Known for his love of spending money to get a good story, he sent 19 reporters to cover Nikita Khrushchev's visit to an Iowa farm in 1959. He also claimed to have discovered "Peanuts" cartoonist Charles Schulz . He began his career at age 8 selling nickel subscriptions to his own neighborhood newspaper... Morris Cunningham , 74, who reported for the Memphis Commercial Appeal for 38 years, died of lung cancer. He was the first reporter to see the then-secret atomic research facility at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, two hours after President Truman announced the destruction of Hiroshima... Gwladys Bowen , 98, former society editor of The Oregonian of Portland, died of respiratory failure. She joined the paper in 1924 and was an editor and reporter there for 35 years... Martha Pulliam , publisher of The Reporter of Lebanon, Indiana, for 50 years and the grandmother of Vice President Dan Quayle, died at age 100... Paul Miller , former chairman of the Associated Press and chairman and president of the Gannett Co. during the years it grew into the nation's largest newspaper chain, died at age 84.
