New Year's Day will bring a new publisher to the Wichita Eagle, as Lou
Heldman picks up where retiring Publisher Peter Pitz leaves off December
31. Heldman, who started his career with Knight Ridder almost 30 years
ago as a Detroit Free Press reporter, has been publisher of the Centre
Daily Times in State College, Pennsylvania, since 1996. "Everybody who's
ever lived [in Wichita] has said wonderful things about [the city],
especially for those with children," says Heldman, 52 and the father of
two. "So it was a chance to be in another really good city...at a
considerably larger newspaper." Pitz, who turned 60 in September, says
he'd been thinking about doing community service work later in life and
realized it was time. He landed his first job with Knight Ridder as
director of operations at the Detroit Free Press in 1983. ###
