The Seattle Times hires Katherine Pfleger, an Associated Press Northwest regional reporter based in Washington, D.C., as one of its two D.C. bureau correspondents. Pfleger, 26, is a D.C.-area native who has never lived in the Pacific Northwest. "There was certainly an added challenge in that. I think it takes a little more work to get to know the readers out there," she says. "It's a wonderfully newsy area. There's a diversity of issues; there's a lot of people who are willing to take the time to tell you their stories." Pfleger began working for the AP in July 1999, after a little more than a year as a reporter in the Washington bureau of the St. Petersburg Times.
