David Hall, editor of Cleveland's Plain Dealer since 1992, leaves the paper to "step back and take a wider view," the paper reports in announcing his May 1 resignation. President and Publisher Alex Machaskee praises the 56-year-old Hall in the story, noting the editor's "fine journalistic mind and many talents." But, privately, Hall "was undermined and criticized constantly by the publisher," says Frank Kuznik, editor of the alternative weekly Cleveland Scene. Machaskee declined to comment further. Neither Hall nor the Plain Dealer's communications director returned calls. Hall tells Plain Dealer staffers he's considering other newspaper work or a college teaching post.
