Newsweek names Mark Whitaker editor, following the death of the magazine's longtime leader Maynard Parker. Whitaker, Newsweek's managing editor since 1996, joined the magazine in 1977 as an intern and has held various reporting and editing positions. Two other Newsweek staffers become co-managing editors: Ann McDaniel, who will retain her position as Washington bureau chief, and Jon Meacham, national affairs editor... The Denver Post gets a new president and publisher--Gerald E. Grilly, president and CEO of McClatchy's Newspaper Network. Grilly, 51, enthusiastically replaces Ryan McKibben, 40, who leaves after 11 years to become president and COO at Western Colorprint Inc., a supplier of comics and related advertising. Grilly calls his new appointment "the newspaper job I've dreamt about for years.".. Sandra K. Johnson, the Associated Press' deputy Washington bureau chief, is bumped up to bureau chief, succeeding Jonathan Wolman, now the wire's managing editor. ###
