She Played One on TV   

Does television blur the lines between fiction and reality? It certainly seemed so when news surfaced that actress Candice Bergen was being considered for a job on CBS' "60 Minutes."

But though the newsmagazine's Executive Producer Don Hewitt did discuss the possibility with Bergen, who played the star TV reporter on CBS' now-canceled "Murphy Brown," the incident "got blown out of proportion," says Kevin Tedesco, spokesman for "60 Minutes." Hewitt and Bergen talked of her doing a story sometime, but "there's no indication that she will be hired," Tedesco says, adding permanent correspondent status was never a part of the conversation.

Could Bergen transfer her hard-nosed journalistic practices from the fictional "F.Y.I." newscast to real-life "60 Minutes" segments? Possibly. Hewitt told the New York Daily News that he auditioned Bergen for his newsmagazine about 25 years ago when she expressed an interest in reporting. While Hewitt described her tryout as "very good," the acting bug proved a stronger lure for Bergen than the world of journalism.
