Goran Jovanovic, Oslobodenje's executive director, calls the support the paper has received from international organizations "a lifeline." "It gave us the feeling that we were not alone and that we could survive," he says. Among the most prominent:

  • The 1993 Sakharov Prize for human rights, which included $15,000, awarded by the European Parliament for fostering "freedom of spirit." Nelson Mandela, president of South Africa, and Alexander Dubcek, president of the Czech Republic, are among past winners.
  • The 1992 International Women's Media Foundation gave its "Courage in Journalism Award" to Editor in Chief Kemal Kurspahic and Deputy Editor Gordana Knezevic.
  • The 1993 Oscar Romero Award, which included $20,000, presented in Vienna, Austria, during the United Nations Conference on Human Rights.
  • The Louis Lyons Award for "conscience and integrity in journalism," which included $5,000, presented by the 1993 Nieman Fellows in Journalism at Harvard University.
  • The 1993 award for courage in journalism from Reporters Sans Frontiers, a Paris-based organization that led a campaign to raise one million francs to help keep Oslobodenje afloat.
  • The 1993 Freedom Award, given by two major Scandinavian dailies, included 20,000 German marks.
  • The National Endowment for Democracy supplied a $100,000 grant; the International Media Fund donated $75,000 worth of computer equipment; and the Nieman Foundation raised $10,000 for the paper. l
